Chapter 12 â Blaze
I spent the day working for Red moving product and "gently" encouraging those who had fallen out of line. The work made me feel dirty. I couldnât stop thinking of Kevin, where he was, and if he was safe. His scent lingered on my skin, I wouldn't feel his body against mine tonight, and it left me frantic. We hadn't even mated, I hadn't claimed him yet, and still, lacking him was like a scab that I couldn't help scratching. I needed to call him. But I was allowed one call a day, and I couldn't call him without having worked out some plan for his rescue.
I got back to my apartment after nine. My first instinct had been to call Lucian. He was our Pack Alpha, and it was natural for me to turn to him in times of trouble. But dragging Lucian into it, before I even knew where Kevin was or how I might rescue him, was foolish. The last thing I needed was for one of Lucian's wolves to get caught by Redâs patrols. Better to use someone who couldn't be linked to us. Someone I could trust, at least for as far as I paid him. So I called Carlos.
The jaguar shifter picked up on the third ring. "Not now, Blaze."
This wasn't my regular phone, but it didn't surprise me Carlos knew I was calling. He did lots of odd jobs for the shifter community. And his game, above all things, was information. "I have a job for you.â
âWorking already.â But he hadnât hung up yet, so he was interested.
I plowed forward. âI need you to find an omega."
"Omega? I'm looking for one of those myself. Client."
"They might be in the same place. The Scion alpha has â â."
"Not over the phone." Carlos hung up.
Definitely interested. Good. Carlos was a shifter of few words and even less time to waste.
I grabbed a beer out of the fridge and was about halfway through it when he knocked on my door.
Carlos was stocky with a shaved head, light brown skin, thin lips, a wide nose, and deep-set eyes that were rounded and a touch too large. They missed nothing. If I asked him right now to close his eyes and describe my apartment, he probably be able to tell me where I had thrown my keys. Which, glancing around, I realized was on the kitchen counter.
He wore black cargo shorts and a tank top. He shut the door behind him, locking it without my permission, and then asked, "When did your omega go missing?"
I explained about Red and how Kevin had chosen to go to the Lodge. I mentioned Kevin and his uncle did not really get along, but I was reluctant to share the rest of it. About Caleb and the evidence of abuse was evident in Kevinâs guardedness, and how even though he felt the connection between us, he still shied away.
"Kevin. He lost his first mate, right?"
"It wasn't a loss."
"No, I bet it wasn't.
